In Their Own Words

"I thought I had everything in order, but the session showed me three categories I had completely overlooked — my old insurance policies being the main one. The folder I left with is sitting on my desk and my daughter knows exactly where to find it now."

"My husband and I attended the family workshop together with our eldest son. The facilitator was patient and very clear about what the session covered and what it did not. We spent about three hours going through everything. It took longer than I expected, but I left with a reference guide I would not have known how to put together on my own."

"My children had been asking me to sort through my documents for years. I kept putting it off because I did not know where to start. Siti made it straightforward. We worked through things one category at a time. Took two and a half hours. I went home with a labelled folder and a printed list of what is in it."

"I enrolled in the Retirement Records Programme six months before I retired and it was worthwhile. Having multiple meetings meant I could locate documents between sessions rather than trying to do everything at once. The binder at the end is something I actually use. It was money well spent."

"I came in expecting it to be a more formal administrative meeting but it felt quite relaxed. The facilitator was straightforward about what they do not cover — no financial advice, no legal commentary — which I appreciated. The printed index has already been useful when I had to locate my property title documents."

"The session was calm and well-paced. I was a little worried it would feel overwhelming going through everything, but we moved through one category at a time and it was entirely manageable. I also appreciated the 30-day follow-up — I had a question about labelling my Amanah Saham documents and got a clear response the same day."

How Participants Got to Where They Needed to Be

Case Study 01

The Situation

A retired teacher from Ampang was approaching her late sixties and had accumulated forty years' worth of personal documents across three filing cabinets. She knew roughly where things were, but her adult children had no idea. She had been trying to sort through it herself for two years without success.

The Session

She enrolled in the Retirement Records Programme. Over three meetings across five weeks, the facilitator worked through each document category, compiled naming standards for her files, and assembled a family reference binder. Her daughter attended the final session. Duration: five weeks, three facilitated meetings.

The Outcome

A comprehensive binder covering 11 document categories, a scanning checklist for her most critical documents, and a shared naming standard that her daughter uses when helping her locate records. She described the result as "a weight I did not realise I was carrying, now put down."

Case Study 02

The Situation

A Damansara family had three adult siblings who each held partial records of their parents' documents. When a parent was hospitalised briefly, it became apparent that nobody could quickly locate the insurance policy details. They decided a shared reference would be valuable, but did not know how to create one.

The Workshop

Two siblings and both parents attended the Family Records Reference Workshop. In one three-hour session, the facilitator guided the family through all relevant document categories, established where records were held, and produced a printed family reference guide — one copy per family member. Duration: one workshop, half a day.

The Outcome

All four family members left with a printed reference guide showing document categories, storage locations, and naming conventions. The family has since used the guide twice without having to phone one another to search for records. The eldest sibling holds the primary binder; the others have copies of the reference index.

Case Study 03

The Situation

A civil servant from Shah Alam was two years from his planned retirement date and wanted to spend his remaining working years with the confidence that his personal documents were organised. He had identification records in good order, but financial institution documents and property records were scattered.

The Session

He began with the Personal Records Inventory Session. In one two-and-a-half-hour session, the facilitator helped him identify seven document categories and produce a printed reference index. He was also given a home-filing structure guide. He later returned for the Retirement Records Programme to build on this foundation.

The Outcome

After completing both services, he has a fully labelled folder set, a comprehensive binder, and a scanning checklist for the documents he intends to digitise. He described the inventory session as "exactly the push I needed to get started," and the Programme as "the job I had been avoiding for five years, done in five weeks."
